Bazar buildings to be assessed

The State Government is planning to launch an assessment of the buildings located in and around Imphal City (under IMC jurisdiction), specially those located at Thangal and Paona Keithel, from June 1, to see if they are built as per the necessary guidelines and norms.
Speaking to media persons at his office at Khoyathong today, Chief Engineer (Buildings) PWD, Manipur, N Noren said that the initiative has been planned by a 7 member committee, which was constituted by Governor Dr Najma Heptulla and which is chaired by the CE, PWD, on May 16.He said that under the initiative, the committee will perform spot verification of the buildings and structures located at the areas under IMC and City police, specially in and around Thangal and Paona Keithel.
During the inspection, age of the buildings located near Keishampat junction, Raj Bhavan, Kangla Western Gate, LIC traffic junction Khoyathong as well as other areas of Imphal city will be determined and it will be investigated whether or not proper approval were taken for the construction and whether proper procedures and guidelines were followed.
He further explained that the inspection will be carried out every Saturday and Sunday of June and urged the owners of the buildings from the said locations to submit all necessary details of their buildings and structures to the office of the Engineering Officer, IMC, before June 30 .
Explaining that a photo of the front portion of the buildings should be submitted along with the details, the CE mentioned that the necessary format for submission can be downloaded from townplanningmanipur.nic.in and the duly filled documents should be submitted to the office in hard copy.
He also informed that the owners of the building deemed unsafe by the committee during the inspection, can file for undestructive tests and avail building safety certificate so that a reverification can be done by the committee.
It may be mentioned that an individual was killed and three others were injured after a part of a very old building collapsed at BT Road on May 10 .
