Mental health camp held at Ukhrul Hospital

A one-day mental health camp was held today at Ukhrul district hospital Hungpung, Ukhrul.
During me camp, mental disorder detection, treatment & psychosocial intervention for the peoples of Ukhrul was conducted by the visiting team of psychiatrist specialists from Imphal.
IQ assessment (for children with intellectual disability, mental retardation) and on spot counselling for the patients and the patients parties related to their problems and sickness were also conducted by the specialists.
Meanwhile, mental awareness programme for the people of Ukhrul was also organized in the conference hall of the hospital during which Dr A Ranita, Psychiatrist, State Nodal Officer (SNO), NMHP enlightened on the lifetime prevalent of severe mental disorder and sickness.
The officer said that most of the individual are easily susceptible to mood disorder, stress related disorder and substance used disorder which is a serious concern for maintaining a positive and healthy environment in the family.
She dwelt on the approach and timely intervention to overcome such sickness of mental disorder.
She informed that over 2% of our state population have different problems of mental related disorder, out of which substance abuse such as consumption of tobacco, alcohol and others recorded highest in the state.
Stating that the State Health Society has also identified vast treatment gap of the patients as per their survey, she said that the reasons might be due to ignorant, stigmatization or lack of awareness with the patients.
Speaking at the sidelines of awareness programme, Dr Ranita said that the awareness programme was basically organized with the objective to integrate 'Mental Healthcare' into general healthcare system for betterment of the people.
She further said that mental treatment centre attached to district hospital has opened for Ukhrul district and appointed Dr Pamreila as District Nodal Officer adding that OPD will be opened for three days in a week with separate rooms.
During the camp, over 110 patients were given free treatment with medicines.
Dr Ranita along with two psychiatrists, Dr Robindro and Dr Nelson, clinical staff psychologist, psychiatrist social worker, psychiatric nurse successfully conducted mental health camp with the support of the administration and staff of Ukhrul district hospital under the aegis of National Mental Health Programme Unit, NHM, Manipur.
