Social service conducted in connection with 'World Cleanup Day'

In connection with World Cleanup Day, a social service led by YAS Minister Letpao Haokip was held at Japhou Bazar, Chandel district today and pledged to make Chandel a plastic free zone.
Rural Women and Child Development Society Japhou in association with District Sports Association Chandel organised the social service in which the Minister along with the locals cleaned the Bazar and its surrounding areas and picked up all the single-use plastics in the area.
Speaking on the sidelines of the event, Letpao Haokip maintained that the cleanliness drive was organised with the CSOs and like minded people of the district to mark the celebration of World Cleanup Day.
Single-use plastics have become an alarming health hazard to humans as well as the environment, the Minister remarked while adding that these single-use plastics, especially in hill areas and during monsoon season, are being carried down to the bigger streams and then lead to Loktak lake.
The Minister narrated the incident where the water channel at Yangoi Karong was completely blocked by plastic bottles and was later cleared using heavy machineries.
Urging all to stop utilising single-use plastics once and for all and encouraging the people to use leaves or recyclable objects for wrapping eatables, the Minister handed over eatables wrapped in leaves.
Later in the day, the Minister along with all the people who took part in the social service, took pledged to make the district a plastic free zone and to give up the use of single-use plastics in the district.
The Minister motivated all communities in the State to adopt healthy lifestyle so as to bring a healthy society.
