Imphal, May 28 2018:
The Extrajudicial Execution Victims Families Association, Manipur (EEVFAM) has appealed to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to assist the investigation of the CBI actively pertaining to a writ petition filed at the Supreme Court.
According to a press release issued by the EEVFAM, the Supreme Court, acting on the writ petition, issued orders on March 12 and April 16 this year which directed the NHRC to assist the CBI in the latter's investigation.
At the initial stage, the NHRC team was very active.
However, it appears that the CBI team is not very happy with the NHRC joining the investigation.
"We have reasons to believe that presently the NHRC team has stopped participating in the investigation on day to day basis as was done earlier and that they are content with visiting the CBI office once a week to get updates", EEVFAM remarked.
It maintained that visiting CBI office in this manner on weekly basis is certainly not what the Supreme Court had in mind when it said NHRC should join the investigation.
The victim families hoped that the presence of NHRC while recording 161 statements under CrPC would serve as eye witnesses.
The victim families expected that all the accused would be identified and arrested promptly after the statements have been recorded.
There was a certain amount of hope that the NHRC would ensure that justice is done.
"Today, however, we find the NHRC team is going slow and has stopped participating in the investigation process on day to day basis.
This is very disappointing", EEVFAM rued.
It then appealed to the NHRC to maintain highest standard of investigation in order to ensure that CBI officers do their work expeditiously and do not succumb to Government pressure.
