Apunba Manipur Kanba Ima Lup (AMKIL) organised a one day seminar on the movement against Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) at Manipur Press Club today.
Various leaders of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) while speaking at the seminar emphasised on the need to remove such an inhuman Act from the State and all forms of agitation should be initiated until the Act is removed from the State.
The seminar was attended by Prof N Pramod, LMS Law College as chief guest while Thokchom Ramani president of All Manipur Social Reformation and Development Samaj, Soibam Momon Leima president of All Manipur Chingmi Tammi Apunba Nupi Lup, Kangujam Ranjit president of Family of Involuntary Disappearance Association Manipur, Renu Takhellambam president of Extra-judicial Execution Victim Families Association Manipur, and Phanjoubam Sakhi, president, AMKIL attended the seminar as dignitaries.
Speaking at the occasion, Prof N Pramod said mat it would be unlawful to challenge AFSPA legally as the Supreme Court has declared the Armed Forces Special Powers Act Constitutional, however he urged the lawmakers to look for a provision if AFSPA can be rendered ineffective just like other various laws in the country which are not enforced legally.
Babloo Loitongbam, Director, Human Rights Alert, citing the recent removal of AFSPA from Tripura and Meghalaya, questioned the inability of State Government to effect the complete removal of this draconian Act from the State.
With the introduction of Night Plaza in the State by the Government signalling improved law arid order situation, this inhuman Act should be removed at the earliest, he added.
