Imphal, March 26 2010:
It is high time for the experts to find out how our forefathers protected Loktak lake and kept it free from pollution, social worker Moirangthem Ashinikumar has stated.
Talking to mediapersons at Thanga today, Ashinikumar observed that problem of Loktak lake is very complex and now the question of whether it would be able to save or not has come to the fore.
Because, the Government has been pumping crores of rupees to save the lake but without any tangible result.
Pointing out that conservation of Loktak lake would not be possible by LDA alone, Ashinikumar said it would require the collective efforts of all the people and the Government Departments.

He asserted that degradation of Loktak and its environment has come about after commissioning of the Loktak Hydro Electric Power Project.
With all rivers flowing into the lake bringing down every possible waste products, Loktak is becoming is dustbin today.
He lamented that many indigenous plants and vegetables that used to be found in the lake have extinct and catching of fishes by the fishermen to meet the requirement for the entire year not possible any more.
At the time of constructing Loktak Hydro Electric Project, the villagers were promised irrigation facilities to enable double cropping and uninterrupted power supply.
But all these have not happened and the villagers have become poorer day by day.
Meanwhile, Ashinikumar today laid the foundation stone for construction of a temple of Goddess Panthoibi at Karang Chingeng Mayai Leikai.
The temple is to be constructed from the money donated by the social worker.
