Imphal, March 26 2010:
A meeting of the State Cabinet today has recommended holding of election to the District Councils in the hill districts, which has been delayed for over 20 years, in two phases in May this year.
The meeting of the Cabinet presided over by Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh was held in the Cabinet room at around 2 pm today.
According to a senior Cabinet Minister, the meeting recommended that election to be conducted by the State Election Commission should be held in two phases in the month of May.
The first phase of the election would cover Senapati, Sadar Hills and Chandel ADCs while that of ADCs of Ukhrul, Tamenglong and Churachandpur in the second phase.
The election notification for the first phase would be issued on April 15 and that of the second on April 22 .
Meanwhile, DGP Y Joykumar has informed that the Ministry of Home would be approached for providing Central forces for deployment in the election and the number of the security personnel that would be required is being worked out.
It may be noted here that the Home Ministry has not only been putting pressures on the State Government for holding the election to the District Councils and the fund for developmental activities in the hill areas have not been released by the Finance Commission.
The District Council election is to be held in 144 constituencies while the Government would nominate two members each.
Today's Cabinet meeting has also recommended prorogation of the 7th session of the 9th Manipur Legislative Assembly.
