National Mathematics Day observed

Mizoram Mathematics Society (MMS) today observed National Mathematics Day here at I&PR Auditorium.
Planning Minister Lalsawta was the chief guest.
5 members of Mizoram Mathematics Society (MMS) who have been recently awarded PhD degree in Mathematics were felicitated at the occasion.
The achievers are R Lalawmpuii, Lalhmangai-hzuala, Ramdinmawia, Denghmingliani Zadeng and LP Lalduhawma.
Ramdinmawia received his doctorate degree from University Lille I-Sciences Et Technologies, France while the other 4 received from Mizoram University.
Prizes of the 7th State Level Mathematics Competition were also given away on the occasion.
The 7th State Level Mathematics Competition was organized for students of Class V, Class VIII, Class X and Class XII and this year the competitive exam was conducted in Aizawl, Lunglei, Serchhip, Champhai and Kolasib Centres.
As many as 1,942 students appeared in the exam that was held on November 25 last.
In Class V level, Zotluangpuii Renthlei d/o Laldingliana Renthlei of Baptist Higher Secondary School bagged the first prize that carries Rs 5000 and a citation.
In Class VIII, Lalthlamuanpuii, d/o Lalrinmawia Hrahsel of Lalmalsawma Memorial School bagged the first prize carrying Rs.6000 and a citation.
In Class X level, Konthoujam Sinthoibi, St Johns Hr Sec School bagged the first prize and went home richer with Rs 7000 and a citation.
In Class XII, Snehasudha Subhadarsini, St Pauls Hr Sec School bagged the first prize and received Rs 8000 and a citation.
In his speech on the occasion as Chief Guest, Minister Lalsawta called for an awakening in Mathematics.
In spite of living in India which produces great Mathematicians who are renowned all over the world, the Mizos have not yet appeared among them; we have yet a long way to go, the Minister said.
The Minister put in plain terms: 'We have been weak and not interest in the subject', and calls for a change in the attitude.
Encouraging the students, he said that an attitude of what others can do we can do is necessary.
Collective effort by the students, teachers, education department, voluntary organisations, society and parents is needed, the Minister said.
Also speaking on the occasion, Chief Scientific Officer of Directorate of Science and Technology Dr RK Lallianthanga acknowledged the initiative of Planning Minister for the progress of Science and Technology Department and also lauded the initiatives of Mizoram Mathematics Society for good progress in Mathematics subject.
