Jiribam, July 15 2018:
Locals of Kashimpur and auto-rickshaw drivers on Saturday repaired Uchathol-Kashimpur road, an inter village road (IVR) in Jiribam which has been in the worst of conditions for years due to lack of proper maintenance by the authorities concerned.
On Saturday morning, local youth in large numbers along with the auto-rickshaw drivers came out on the road with tools in their hands and started repairing the damaged road - from Uchathol to Kashimpur.
The inter village road which connects to NH-37 at Gularthol is the life-line of 5 (five) villages with a total population of about 12,000 .
Due to the deteriorated condition of the road, villagers have been facing many inconveniences, especially when it comes to transporting patients to the district hospital.
A pregnant woman had recently delivered a baby on the road without even reaching hospital due to deplorable and inaccessible condition of the road, said one youth.
Heavy rains and lack of proper drainage systems along the road have further dampened the condition of the road, said locals who have been waiting for the authorities concerned to step in and repair the road.
Overloaded and heavy vehicles of the railway construction companies plying the road during the rainy season have also worsen the condition of the road, said the local youth with spades repairing the road.
Beside other commuters, school going children have been suffering daily, they said.
Auto-rickshaws are the only means of public transport available for the villages along the road.
It is very difficult to drive when the road is slippery and filled with potholes in many places, said an auto-rickshaw driver who helped the locals repair the road.
Seeking Government's attention, the locals appealed the authorities concerned to look into their grievances and repair the road.
The locals also warned that they will restrict movement of heavy vehicles on the road, if the authorities concerned does not improve and repair the road at the earliest.
