1 lakh lemon grass saplings gifted so far

The location of Joupi Battalion of HQ 28 Sector Assam Rifles in Chandel district is one of the most underdeveloped areas in Manipur owing to its remoteness, treacherous terrain and inclement weather.
Over the years, the local populace has always predominantly dependent on the cultivation of the poppy plant for survival.
With perseverance and dogged determination, Joupi Battalion of Assam Rifles motivated the populace to forsake poppy cultivation and embrace lemon grass cultivation in lieu.
Over the last three months, the unit has distributed lemon grass saplings to 13 villages in the area of responsibility.
Recently, the unit's Commandant, Col Sachin Jain, SM participated in distribution of saplings to four villages of Molanghat, Aibol Joupi, Hollengjang and Mombi in the area.
In all, a total of approximately one lakh saplings of lemon grass were distributed to the villagers till now whose transportation was also provided by the unit.
The involvement and dedication of the Assam Rifles towards the initiative would go a long way in creating a positive change in the mindset of the locals and bringing a new dawn in their lives, conveyed a press release issued by IGAR South.
