Recommendations adopted for promotion of Thang Ta

Imphal, July 15 2018: As an endeavour to promote Thang-Ta (a form of Manipuri martial arts) education in the State, altogether six recommendations were unanimously adopted during a one day discussion programme held on the topic "prospect of thang-ta education in Manipur".

The resolution includes, appointment of lecturers of Thang-Ta from among the 688 contract lecturers which is going to be appointed by the Government for its higher secondary schools, introduction of the martial art form (which has already been included as one of the elective subjects from class IX to XII) in primary school level as well as in Sport University.

The discussion also resolved to approach the Chief Minister and the Education Minister regarding he appointment of at least one teacher of Thang-Ta in each Govt School of the State apart from resolving to launch agitations by the Joint Committee of Thang-Ta organization if the Govt fails to consider the points mentioned, on or before July 27 .

The discussion programme which was organized at the premise of Government Dance College, Palace Compound, today, was moderated by AMJWU advisor N Tombi Raj.

Speaking as a panellist Thang-Ta Syllabus Committee, Manipur University of Culture, member Dr L Rokngang stressed on the need of introspecting whether the objective of the syllabus being introduced in the schools of the State has begun bearing fruit.

He expressed desire to impart Thang-Ta in a systematic manner and opined that such endeavour will go a long way towards developing and preserving the art form in the State.

He also called for adhering to the values of Thang-Ta in the prevailing society so that it will become one of its constituent parts.

Another panellist Dr Paonam Gunindro, who is a Professor of Manipur University and a member of Thang-Ta Syllabus Committee of BOSEM and COHSEM underscored the importance of giving ample opportunity to the students who opted Thang-Ta opted as done in other elective subjects in the academic career in the pursuit of promoting the art form in the schools and the State.

He contended that the correct step for preserving Thang-Ta will be to make the art form a living art form instead of preserving it in archives or museums.

Informing that Thang-Ta has high ethical, moral and spiritual values, the professor opined that imparting Thang-Ta among the populace of the State, particularly the students community and youth, could prevent deterioration/erosion of value system in the State.

He also asked the experts and intellectuals to work towards preserving Thang-Ta.
