JFD takes NRC case to Governor

Imphal, August 01 2026: The Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) has sought the Governor's intervention on the demand for updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) .

The JFD today submitted a memorandum to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla seeking intervention of the Government of Manipur to recommend to the Government of India the updation of the NRC with 1951 as the base year before conducting population census in Manipur.

It said that preparation of an updated and credible citizens' register is essential for ensuring the integrity of demographic data and for maintaining public confidence in the census process.

On the other hand, many IDPs have been taking shelter at different relief camps because of the conflict situation in Manipur, mainly engineered by the illegal immigrants who came from across the border.

The issue of illegal immigrants must be dealt with by updating the NRC, taking 1951 as the base year, the JFD asserted.

It appealed to the Governor to see that the population census is deferred in Manipur until the process of updating NRC is completed so that the census is conducted on the basis of verified citizenship records.

The memorandum also mentioned that the JFD Manipur has fixed August 6, 2026 as the deadline for the Government of Manipur to take necessary steps and make an appropriate recommendation to the Government of India regarding the public demand.
