Imphal, April 03 2010:
Coalition on Children's Right to Protection (CCRP), Manipur has blamed the school management for the death of Class III student, Konsam Roshni at Arapti on April 1 .
The child died when building of the school she studied Goura Thambal Memorial Academy collapsed in a rainstorm.
A CCRP statement said the incident must not be construed merely as a result of natural calamity but there were also lapses and negligence on the part of the school management.
Maintaining that it had conducted a spot inquiry of the ravaged school, CCRP said that the school building was not only supported by bamboo pillars and bamboo mats but also roofed with CGI sheets.
The visible negligence and recklessness on the part of the school management was that they have been running the school having 580 students since 2003, CCRP opined.
CCRP also demanded that the State Government institute an enquiry to find out how officials concerned granted 'recognition' to the school which has very poor quality of infrastructure.
The erring official must be booked, CCRP demanded.
The body further opined that standard of buildings and infrastructure of all the schools, both Government and private must be checked in order to prevent such tragedies in future.
Recognition of unfit schools must be cancelled and Govt control mushrooming up of private schools, it opined.
CCRP also demanded announcement of compulsory training of the teachers to train on disaster management as Manipur is in high seismic zone.
