Maintaining that the hospital authority has taken serious note of the media reports about contamination of Kongba River by the effluents discharged from the hospital, Bhimo asserted that an emergency meeting of the hospital authority which was held following the media reports resolved to curtail improper disposal of biomedical wastes from the hospital.
The emergency meeting unanimously decided to install two numbers of 5 Kl and two numbers of 25 Kl Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) for the hospital as a long term measure, he said.
Stating that installation of the ETPs will take a few months, Bhimo went on to inform that for the time being and as an emergency measure, the liquid biomedical waste coming out from JNIMS shall be treated with application of 2% Sodium Hypochlorite Solution at source areas like OT, laboratories, labour room and ATC as usual.
Disinfectants like bleaching powder will be poured into the drain at three or four locations with a gap of 20 feet apart till the proposed four ETPs are arranged.
The JNIMS authority will also create and fill up certain posts recommended by Manipur Pollution Control Board (MPCB) after the approval from the' competent higher authority of the medical institute, Dr Bhimo added.
The emergency meeting also resolved to construct a new pit at the western side of mortuary complex so that the liquid biomedical waste released from the said mortuary may he prevented from directly going into the drainage.
