Imphal, November 12 2018:
A day after animal lovers protested the controversial killing of Avni, ayoung tigress and the gunning down of a GPS-tagged Amur Falcon, six long-tailed broadbills were found dead mysteriously at two different places - Imphal and Thoubal - on Monday.
Of the six dead birds, four were found at Sagolband Tera area and one in Thoubal district in the morning, while the remaining one was found in Yairipok on Sunday.
Though post mortem was conducted on the four birds found in Imphal, no specific findings could be made out owing to their putrefaction, managing trustee of People for Animals (Manipur) L Biswajeet Meitei said.
"After receiving report of the deaths of these beautiful birds, we moved to the spots and collected the four carcasses from the Sagolband Tera area before taking them to the State Veterinary head-office in Imphal where the post mortem was conducted," Biswajeet added.
Long-tailed broadbills birds are found in Southeast Asian countries including some North East States and they are rarely seen in the valley and urban areas of the region, he said and added that they are insect eaters and during winter they travel from higher altitude to lower altitude but no defined migration route.
On Sunday, PFA Manipur in association with many other animal lovers' bodies and wild life photographers carried out a gathering to condole the death of the Amur Falcon and Avni at the northern gate of Kangla fort in Imphal city.
They also demanded to book the culprits involved in killing the Amur Falcon and justice for Avni.
Similar protest was also organized by Tamenglong Animals Home at Tamenglong district where the falcon was targeted by poachers.
