Pressing for its demand for amendment of recruitment rules of primary teachers so that qualification on Meetei Mayek is made mandatory, the SDO office of Lilong was set afire yesterday by MEELAL volunteers, according to a statement issued by MEELAL.
In connection with the incident of torching the SDO office, one MEELAL volunteer Md Islaudin was nabbed by police, it disclosed.
Ridiculing the alleged statement of Education Minister that the primary teachers would be imparted training on Meetei Mayek after appointment, it asserted that the conduct of the Chief Minister and the Education Minister was a direct confrontation against the language of the people.
Saying the movement of MEELAL is for the welfare for the people and the State, it declared that MEELAL would go on with its stir without any let-up.
It said that MEELAL would not be deterred from its campaign to revive the indigenous script by the arrest of its activists.
