83 pc households have sanitary latrines

Imphal, January 29 2018:
Swachh Bharat Mission-Gramin, taken by the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, is making good progress in the State with 83.52percentoftheState'stotal households having sanitary latrines.
Swachh Bharat Mission-Gramin under which sanitary latrines are constructed by Government at the cost of Rs 12,000 for economically backward families is being implemented in the State by PHED.
The practice of open defecation is still quite at the National level and it stands at 40 per cent of the country's total households.
Swachh Bharat Mission-Gramin launched on October 2, 2014 is aimed at completely eradicating the unhealthy practice of open defecation by October 2, 2019 .
According to a survey conducted by PHED, the State's total number of households is 4,49,167 .
Out of them, 1,90,749 households already have sanitary latrines.
The Government has been working to construct a sanitary latrine each for the remaining 2,58,418 households by October 2 next year.
The department has constructed 1,45,526 sanitary latrines since October 2, 2014 .
So far, 83.52 per cent of the State's total households have sanitary latrines.
On the other hand, 683 villages have been declared open defecation free.
