Grow more medicinal plants for economic development says MS Khaidem

Ukhrul, September 24 2018:
While speaking at a one-day training programme on "Processing & Marketing of Medicinal & Aromatic plants" for the farmers of Ukhrul District today at Hotel Oasis Hamleilkhong, Ukhrul, MS Khaidem, project coordinator of Manipur Small Farmer's Agri-Business Consortium urged the people of Ukhrul District to grow more highly nutritious and medicinal plant to generate substantial income which can also improve the economic condition of the farmers.
Ukhrul being located at eastern Himalayan belt is home to varieties of indigenous medicinal plants having high commercial value, he added.
He further said that Ballon plant is the only medicinal plant found in Ukhrul having medicinal values and economic importance among other rare species found in Ukhrul while adding that the farmers should grow such high value plants which has the potential to generate high income if marketed properly.
Speaking as resource person, Prof Dr PK Singh enlightened on the rare species such as Chinese Ginseng, Siberia Ginseng found in Ukhrul District and added that other exotic plants also thrived very well in the region which has high value in the market.
PK Singh also said that he has been doing research in the district since 1970 and has identified rare plants found only in Ukhrul District which carries high economic value.
Speaking at the occasion, Thingreiphy Lungharwo emphasized on the need of conservation of rich bio-diversity in the region for sustainable used in a fair & equitable manner.
More than fifty farmers including Agri officer T Suisa and KVK staffs from Ukhrul district attended the training programme which was jointly organized by Manipur Small Farmer's Agri business Consortium and Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Ukhrul under the aegis of National Institute of Agricultural Marketing, Jaipur.
