Imphal, May 03, 2013:
Tangkhul Katamnao Long, Imphal (TKLI) or Tangkhul Students Union, Imphal unit has alleged that Manipur Government has thrust aside what it says horrific incidents' of Nganaongai Awungshi and Alice Kamei and expressed unhappiness over the Government's alleged unwarranted dealing with these cases.
TKLI in a statement said Friday that it expresses the deepest shock over the brutal murder of Awungshi at North AOC in Imphal in front of the CCTV installed between North Kangla gateway and Hotel Tampha in a hit and run case wherein a VVIP Scorpio jeep was responsible on December 18, 2012. It alleged that the Government of Manipur is unfair while dealing with the cases of Awangshi and Alice Kamei even as it instantly took care of the cases of actress Momoko and reporter Dwijamani.
Awaungshi was the headmaster of Tusom Frontier High School while Alice Kamei is a school student, it said and further alleged that even employees and students who are indisputably peaceful citizens of Manipur are not entitled to enjoy the safety, security and justice in the state when they become victims because of being tribal.
The statement also alleged that "We are really shocked beyond imagination and felt alarmed to pursue even normal activities and livelihood in the state of Manipur." TKLI further questioned the importance of installation of CCTVs in Imphal and asked if they are merely being installed for decoration or for safety.
Five months have elapsed since Awungshi had died but the culprits are still in large and that the police have not been able to establish their identities or arrest them till date, the statement said and alleged that this is glaring example of callousness of the police and the authorities.
TKLI has been demanding Manipur Government to pay Rs 5 lakh ex-gratia and a suitable Government job to Awungshi's family.
At the same time, TKLI also condemned the recent attack and life attempt on Chingai constituency MLA MK Preshaw Shimray by unidentified miscreants.
"We appeal to the perpetrators to openly come out and clarify on the grievous crime and amend themselves so that peaceful co-existence and all-embracing atmosphere prevails in our disturbed land," it appealed.
