Mathematics workshop for media persons held

In connection with the observance of the National Year of Mathematics 2012-13, Vigyan Prashar and National Council for Science and Technology Communication, Department of Science and Technology jointly organised a workshop for media persons on Mathematics and Science Communication at Manipur Press Club today.
Manipur Mathematical Society President Huidrom Jayantakumar, Vigyan Prashar Senior Scientist Dr Subodh Mahanti, Vigyan Prashar Master Resource Person YS Gill, Manipur Science and Technology Council Director Surendranath Singh, Manipur University Biochemistry Head Roopchandra Singh, former Principal of DM College of Science G Tomba were present at the workshop.
Speaking at the workshop, Huidrom Jayantakumar said, the media workshop was part of a series of programmes being organised across the country by Vigyan Prashar, an autonomous body of the Ministry of Science and Technology and National Council for Science and Technology Communication, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.
The workshop is part of the activities of the National Mathematics Year 2012-13 being observed to mark the 125th birth anniversary of the great Mathematician Srinivasan Ramanujan, he added.
Giving his introductory remarks, Dr Subodh Mahanti said that the idea behind the workshop was to highlight the importance of Mathematics in understanding the secrets of nature and solving practical problems, and to make people aware of India's Mathematical heritage.
Saying that Mathematics is used as a universal language and tool for any quantitative research in all the Sciences, Dr Subodh Mahanti said that the world has seen the emergence of disciplines like Mathematical Biology, Mathematical Ecology, Mathematical Geography and Mathematical Physics etc.
Vigyan Prashar Scientist Nimish Kapoor said that besides production of films and radio programmes and publication of books, Vigyan Prashar has been involved in other popularisation activities as well.
It has not only set up a network of Science Clubs across the country but also involved in Science and Mathematics popularisation among school students and the common people.
Speaking on Science and Mathematics writing, the scientist requested the writers and journalists to use simple language.
