Lamka, November 14 2012:
The Village Authority election that began sometime last month amidst a mix degree of resentment and bliss is set to wind up by November end as elections were already held in about eight percent of the villages located within the district.
Except for the interior Tipaimukh sub-division, where the election is ongoing and some pockets in Churachandpur, the process for electing Village Authorities in over 260 recognised villages of the district have been completed, said the Deputy Commissioner Jacintha Lazarus today.
Initial objections raised by the chiefs and some inordinate attempts to interfere during the election by a handful organizations have forced re-poll in some areas while the date of polling have been differed for others.
The government's approval for village consensus from wherever it can obtain them is understood to have averted any major conflict.
Notably enough, various Chiefs' associations have publicly declared that they will oppose to the exercise which is against their customary practices.
