Imphal, November 14 2012:
The proscribed UG group, Revolutionary People's Front (RPF) has greeted the people of Manipur particularly the women on the occasion of Ningol Chakkouba festival.
In a statement, RPF recalled that the history of Ningol Chakkouba goes back to the reign of Nongda Lairen Pakhangba, who ruled Kangleipak from 33 AD.
Poireiton was invited for a feast by his sister Laisna, who was the wife of King Pakhangba.
Subsequently, it became a tradition for the married sisters to invite their brothers for a feast and the event used to known as Piba Chakkouba.
However, King Chandrakirti changed the tradition of Piba Chakkouba into Ningol Chakkouba by inviting his sisters for feast at his palace.
Extending the Ningol Chakkouba wishes to the women in the state as well as outside the state, RPF appealed the people of the state to use local products instead of imported ones as gifts for Ningol Chakkouba from this year.
While people of the state spend huge amount of money on importd goods in the name of Ningol Chakkouba, non-local businessmen are busy filling up their safes with the money spent by the Manipuris.
Moreover, the competition over carrying imported eatables and presenting gifts has affected the poor people who could not compete with the rich people.
It further stated that parents and brothers can always give whatever they like on any day instead of on Ningol Chakkouba day.
