Imphal, November 14 2012:
The proscribed Revolutionary People's Front (RPF) has extended heartiest greetings to all 'daughters' of the State on the auspicious occasion of Ningol Chakkouba.
A statement issued by the publicity secretary of RPF, T Leisemba stated that the practice of inviting married sisters for a lunch on the joyous occasion of Ningol Chakkouba has been followed since 33 AD during the reign of Nongda Lairen Pakhanglakpa, and known then as Piba Chakkouba.
It evolved to be known as Ningol Chakkouba during the reign of King Chandrakirti.
Since then, inviting married sisters/daughters for lunch and presenting gifts to them became an annual high point of the society.
Noting that a change has taken place in the mode of observance of the event with the changing times, the RPF statement observed that the occasion has shed tears of many brothers and parents who could not afford to arrange valuable gifts to their married sisters and daughters while some well-to-do parents and brothers laughed away.
The statement also noted that local produces are neglected while purchasing gift items for sisters and daughters for the occasion much to the advantages of businessmen.
This has defiled the sanctity of the festival.
It further noted that gifts may be presented to Ningols on other occasions other than Ningol Chakkouba.
Calling upon the people to make the joyous occasion an event to renew love and bond, the RPF urged the people to regard indigenous produces while arranging gifts for married sisters and daughters.
