Imphal, May 25 2009: A pall of gloom enveloped the campus of the Central Manipur University after some unknown persons shot dead former Dean of Students' Welfare, Prof Md Islamuddin inside the campus around 12.10 pm today.

Prof Islamuddin is survived by his wife, two sons and one daughter.

The 53 year-old, Prof Islamuddin, who hails from Yairipok Changamdabi, stayed along with his family at the quarter inside the MU campus.

He was a respected professor of Economics Department and was holding additional chage of Procter.

Reports culled from the university campus indicate that Prof Islamuddin was accosted by two unknown youths on the pretext of talking with him while he was walking on the footpath from the Humanity Block towards the Library, and pumped a few bullets into him.

After shooting him, the assailants escaped on two Kinetic Hondas which were kept ready.

Since the particular spot was deserted at the time, nobody could note down the registration numbers of the two vehicles.

Immediately after hearing the sound of gun-shots, people from nearby went out to see what was happening and found Prof Islamuddin lying in a pool of blood.

Teachers of the university immediately took him in a car to RIMS Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Two bullets hit him in the left side of his abdomen and one bullet hit him in the left thigh.

On receiving the news of the incident, teams of Imphal West district police commandos rushed to the spot and blocked all the entry points to the university and started combing the campus to nab the assailants.

The universitycampus was almost under seige for a few hours during which no one was allowed to enter or go out.

After thoroughly checking all suspicious areas inside the campus, the police commandos cordoned all three men's hostels of the university and verified every single hostellite.

They also entered every single roon in the hostels and conducted seach.

Police detained and interrogated four suspects for several hours.

However, it is not yet known whether they have been released or are still being detained.

Hue and cry rocked the RIMS morgue where the dead body of professor Asllamuddin was kept for postmortem.

His wife and family members arrived at RIMS morgue when they were informed of the incident.

Apart from chief minister, O Ibobi, works minister, K Ranjit, educaitn minister L Jayentakumar, MOBC minister Md Allauddin, Tribal development minister DD Thaisii PDA chairman Dr Kh Loken, MLA Hemochandra and Th Lokeshwor also arrived at the RIMS morgue.

Chief minister, O Ibobi strongly condemned the killing terming the act as that of coward people.

The killing of teacher inside the university campus is "most unfortunate" incident while outside people are arguing of not appropriate for locating a Central University there.

It is shameful killing teacher inside his institute, he said adding that educational institutions and hospital are not touch even during war time also.

He will not tolerate with the killing, Ibobi said assuring that no want even students or student body if found guilty in murder of the teacher will not be let without awarding befitting punishment.

Education minister, Jayentakumar observed that killing of teacher inside the university campus is not an act of civilized people and it hurt the interest.

Despite there have various reasons, killing teacher inside his institute campus is not the act of a human.

Former president of the MUSU Ksh Narayan said the incident will cause great disturbances to the teaching atmosphere of the university.

Shadowed of security lapse could be observed.

Expressing strong denounce with the killing incident, MU authority observed condolence with its Vice-Chancellor, C Amuba in the lead and a meeting after the condolence service discussed the situation arising out in the University campus before and aftermath of the incident.

Till late tonight none owned responsible for the murder.

Police, MU authority as well as family are yet to know the motive behind the murder.

But, there has been some controversy over the conduct of the election of the MUSU in which Islamuddin who the dean of students welfare was alleged by Joint Task Force, Human Resource (JTF-HR) of the KYKL-UNLF of irregularity in the issue of identity cards to the students and favourism.

The crisis prevailing in the MUSU came up when the Returning Officer rejected candidatures of two candidates who filed nomination for contesting to the post of president.

Out of three candidates only one filed his nomination paper for the presidentship of MUSU, after which the RO of the election committee announced Ph Ibosana who was the only one to file his nomination papers as the president of MUSU uncontested.

While, the Chancellor of the MU refused to recognized the newly elected president of the MUSU and the Vice-Chancellor constituted a students' council keeping behind the newly elected student union's president, the Joint Task Force, Human Resource (JTF-HR) of the KYKL-UNLF looking after educational institution alleged irregularities in the issue of students' identity cards and favouritism of the Election Committee of MUSU.

They alleged that the conduct of Prof Islamuddin, the then Dean of Students Welfare of the university is misusing his authority to please a particular students' group.

"The Dean has carried out his work with bias attitude openly which is 'unethical' and uncalled for," the statement of the JTF-HR circulated to the media house on April 20, 2009 stated.

It may also be recalled that some year back before the MU was taken over by the Centre, one professor named Trinath Ratho was also killed by some miscreants.

Apart from this there were instance of shooting to injure of the then VC, Ng Bijoy and the then registrar Ranjan at the legs.
