Imphal, March 09 2011:
Manipur Alliance for Child Rights (MACR) has demanded the Government to set up a Commission at the earliest possible in due consideration of the need for a State Commission for Protection of Child Rights following the implementation of Right to Education Act that guarantee compulsory elementary education to all children upto 14 years of age.
Addressing a press conference in connection with the demand at Manipur Press Club today, convenor of MACR K Pradipkumar pointed out that following the implementation of Right to Education Act all over India with exception to Jammu &Kashmir since 2009, the Act has also been enforced in Manipur since December 12 2010 along with setting up of a State project office and appointment of Secretary Education (S) and Director of Education as the implementing agencies.
Unfortunately, there has been no sign of implementing the Act properly in Manipur and MARC has been receiving numerous complaints in this regard.
Taking serious note of these complaints, MARC has conducted inspection and found that most of the school authorities including that of private schools have followed any of the rules and regulations laid down under the Act.
Taking into consideration of all these factors, the Government should take up necessary steps toward setting up a State Commission for Protection of Child Rights at the earliest possible, he demanded.
