International Women's Day observed at Tamenglong

Imphal, March 09 2011:
Tamenglong District Women Committee of United NGOs Mission, Manipur observed the 100th International Women's Day with the participation of womenfolk from different communities at Tamenglong district headquarters yesterday.
CEO of TADC, RK Rogaisin, DAC Kaiba Riamei and Tamei SDO Hannah Gangmei graced as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively in the function organised under the theme, 'Equal access to education, training and science and technology: Pathway to decent work for women' .
In her keynote address, Co-Convenor of Women Committee of UNMM, M Sobita said that women started raising voice for their rights after the historic women's revolt at different textile factories in USA in 1857 .
The women workers were demanding for reduction of working hours from eight to 12 hours in the textile factories.
She added that bringing development to a Nation is closely relate to the entitlement of equal rights to women with their male counterparts.
Speaking on the context of Manipur, M Sobita observed that each and every women of the State must become competent in varied fields in order to take part in the process of resolving the India-Manipur conflict.
She added that International Women's day has been observing across the globe since 1975 by United Nations Organisation (UNO) under different themes.

Sobita opined that this year's theme is relevant in the context of Manipur as the percentage of literate women in the State is only 59.70 .
She observed that efforts must be made to educate each and every women of the State in order to bring confidence in their minds and make them self dependant like men.
Speaking at the occasion, RK Ragaisin said that women were remain occupied with household works and they were not able to take part in social activities like their male counterparts uptil recent past.
Maintaining that women also have lots of things which men cannot do, RK Ragaisin said that International Women's Day is the day when women across the globe started voicing for their rights.
Hannah Gangmei said that although women have started enjoying privilege in many fields, there are still lots to be fulfilled.
All women must unite together and voice stronger for equal rights with men, she added.
Maintaining that observing such a day in Tamenglong is significant, Hannah observed that the function would enlighten the suppressed minds of women of the district for their rights.
Colourful cultural items were also presented in the function.

President of Manipuri Sahitya Parishad, Jiribam, S Tanubabu, President of AJWA, S Manglembi Devi, Vice-chairperson of Jiribam Municipal Council, K Kombirei Devi, Zilla Parishad Member Ph Manteshori Devi and Secretary of Jiri Ima Meira Paibi Lup, L Bimola Devi were the chief guest, president and guests of honour of the function respectively.
