Imphal, April 01 2011:
With the demand for the creation of Phungyar district becoming more vocal by the day, the United Naga Council (UNC) has asked "the so called Demand Committee (s)" to withdraw their representation submitted to the Government (s) immediately.
The Phungyar District Demand Committee had even threatened of resorting to drastic forms of agitation if the district is not created by April 15.Creation of Phungyar district will amount to bifurcating Ukhrul district.
The United Naga Council (UNC) without naming any particular committee, has said," It is implicit that the demand for new district (s) at this point of time in Naga/hill areas of Manipur is the handiwork of the adversaries to vitiate and derail the Alternative Arrangement process which is in progress peacefully and democratically.
Therefore, the Naga people represented by the UNC seriously view this political gimmick as totally unhealthy and hence, urged the so called Demand Committee (s) to immediately withdraw their representation (s) submitted to the government (s) in the interest of the people" .
The United Naga Council reminded that the Naga people in the State of Manipur have severed all political ties with the Government of Manipur demanding the intervention of the Government of India for an Alternative Arrangement outside the Government of Manipur.
"As a follow up,the Government of India intervened and convened the tripartite talk on December 3 last year at Tahamzam (Senapati) knowing the sharp social and political division prevailing between the two communities in the State of Manipur" .
It can be noted that the Phungyar District Demand Committe has set April 15 as the deadline for the Government to upgrade the Phungyar assembly constituency into a full-fledged district by bifurcating the Ukhrul district.
