Imphal, April 01 2011:
Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh has reportedly assured a delegation of Phungyar District Demand Committee that the Government is discussing whether Phungyar Assembly Constituency comprising four sub-divisions of Ukhrul district can be segregated for creation of Phungyar as the 10th district headquarters of the State.
A 24-member delegation of Phungyar District Demand Committee led by its convenor and MLA of Phungyar Assembly Constituency Wungnaoshang Keishing met the Chief Minister at around 11 am today and urged him to turn Phungyar Assembly Constituency into a full-fledged district.
Talking to The Sangai Express after their meeting with the Chief Minister, the delegation disclosed that during the hour-long meeting, the Chief Minister not only gave a patient hearing to the Committee's demand for creation of Phungyar as the new and 10th district headquarters of the State but also responded positively.
Expressing gratitude to Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh, the delegation further disclosed that the Chief Minister told them that the demand for creation of Phungyar Assembly Constituency comprising four sub-divisions of Ukhrul district namely Phungyar, Kamjong, Kasom Khullen and Sahamphung as a district is reasonable and the Cabinet meeting which was held yesterday had also discussed the demand seriously.
As the Government has already started discussing the demand, the Chief Minister urged the delegation to call off the proposed agitations of the Demand Committee like picketing of Government offices, imposing of district/State wide bandh, etc.
Accordingly, to respect the appeal of the Chief Minister, the District Demand Committee has decided to suspend all its proposed agitations for sometime, the delegation informed.
The Committee had earlier set April 15 as the deadline to the Government for fulfilling its demand for creation of Phungyar Assembly Constituency as a separate district of the State.
Prior to the meeting with the Chief Minister, the delegates of the District Demand Committee reportedly met MP of Outer Manipur Parliamentary Constituency Thangso Baite where the MP too endorsed the demand as reasonable and timely and assured every possible assistance from his side in this regard.
