Sahitya Parishad holds annual meeting

The Manipuri Sahitya Parishad held its 80th annual meeting with Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam as chief guest at JN Dance Academy here today.
Speaking at the meeting, Gaikhangam asserted that literature not only reflects but also guides a society.
He promised that he would put in his best efforts so that Lai Haraoba is included in the UNESCO Cultural Heritage list and Manipuri language gets the classical language tag.
Education Minister M Okendro also acknowledged the momentous contributions made by senior literatteurs and scholars of the State towards promoting Manipuri literature.
He also appealed to all scholars and poets to cooperate with the Government's efforts towards promoting all dialects/languages spoken by different communities of Manipur.
He declared that the cash component of the annual State Literature Award would be increased to Rs three lakh from this year and the lifetime achievement award to Rs five lakh.
He further assured monetary assistance of five per cent of his Local Area Development Fund towards renovation of the Manipur Sahitya Parishad office, The annual meeting also featured a seminar which was moderated by Manipuri Sahitya Parishad president Prof Th Tombi.
During the seminar, papers were presented on Dr Th Ibohanbi's work Punsi Wari Iba Ama Oina Nongthombam Kunjamohan and Dr N Maya's work Lamkoi Wari Iba Ama Oina Nongthombam Kunjamohan.
