Senapati, June 23 2020:
With high expectations of garnering sufficient food grains for next year and for fear of food shortage due to COVID-19 pandemic, many villagers expanded their cultivation this year.
However, much to their dismay and painful sight, more than 30 paddy fields were damaged by flash flood and subsequent mudslides last week.
According to villagers of Ziumi under Willong sub-division in Senapati District, the incident occurred around 5:30 pm after a heavy rainfall in the late noon, causing mudslides to totally submerge many paddy fields with stones and muds.
As a result, the fields were beyond repair and recovering.
These fields which are located in Ningdi are 6 kms away South East from Ziumi village.
Making the matter worse, the natural disaster also destroyed 4 irrigation canals and one iron bridge.
The affected farmers have appealed to the State Government and concerned department(s) to urgently avail relief measures.
With no paddy fields to cultivate this year, the affected families are most likely to suffer food shortage next year.
One of the farmers lamented that with no food grains expected this year, we humbly appeal the concerned authorities to hear our plea and rescue from such misfortune.
