The 13th State Level Pineapple Festival 2020 was organised at Thambalnu Market in Andro, Imphal East today.
Sponsored by the North East Council (NEC), the festival was organised by DOAK (Development Organisation Andro Kendra) under the aegis of EBADA and MIDH (Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture), Horticulture and Soil Conservation, Government of Manipur.
Due to coronavirus pandemic, the festival was scaled down adhering to social/physical distancing norms.
DOAK general secretary H Oken said the festival is held for 4/5 days every year encouraging the pineapple farmers.
This year, the festival was held for one day only following COVID-19 safety norms, he said adding DOAK will assist the farmers sell their produces amid the pandemic.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the farmers are facing difficulty in finding market to sell their produces.
Founder of DOAK and ex-Minister Th Shyamkumar said Chief Minister N Biren Singh and Department of Horticulture will be consulted to find market for the pineapple farmers.
Encouraging farmers growing pineapples on Ngariyan Ching, he said the produces have increased this year.
The festival aims at encouraging the farmers and promoting their produces, he added.
DOAK members, farmers and officials of the Horticulture Department took part in the festival.
