Olympic medallist in 2012 and 6 time world champion, MC Mary Kom inaugurated "Sports Science Centre" at Sports Authority of India North Eastern Region Centre (SAI-NERC), Imphal today.
Attending the inaugural function of the science centre as the chief guest, MC Mary Kom who is also a Rajya Sabha MP stated that the centre will immensely help State players and called on all for careful management and maintenance of it.
Francis Marwein, Regional Director, SAI-NERC, Imphal; Dr RK Lenin, Prof and HOD, Psychiatry Department, RIMS; Lianminthang, Deputy Director, SAI-NERC, Imphal; Dronacharya Awardee Dr L Ibomcha Singh, Deputy Director, SAI-NERC, Imphal also attended the inaugural function as presidium members.
Speaking as the functional president, Regional Director, Francis Marwein stated that the centre was developed under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports after the establishment of such an important centre was envisioned last year.
He also maintained that requisite staff and equipment will be added soon to ensure the centre becomes fully functional and serves its desired purpose, he continued.
Dr RK Lenin, who attended as the guest of honour said a person fully becomes a sportsperson only when he/she has the innate qualities to pursue his or her goal with perseverance and dedication.
Above these, the person can become a more successful player when there is unwavering physical, mental and economical support from behind, he said while also expressing desire for addition of Sports Psychologists among the faculties of the Sports Science Centre.
Dronacharya Awardee, L Ibomcha also noted that the Sports Science Centre will give a wide range of benefits to the State players.
MC Mary Kom, a Padma Bhusam awardee, was also honoured with a memento by the Regional Director of SAI-NERC Imphal.
It may be noted that the Sports Science Centre is the upgradation of Sports Science Centre and Fitness Centre which was first established at the SAI-NERC Imphal back in 2000 and it aims to provide high level physical, technical and medical support to athletes and coaches with the help of Sports Science unit, fitness and conditioning unit and sports medicine units.
The Centre has now been enriched with the addition of new facilities such as anthropometry, nutrition, physiotherapy, psychology, strength and conditioning and massages.
It is learnt that the Sports Science Centre is set to induct a new doctor, three assistant nurses, one physiotherapist, one lab technician and other requirements very soon.
