Imphal, August 19:
Government offices located in Lamphelpat area continued to remain under flood water following the incessant rainfall in the last few days, thanks to the inactivity of the Irrigation and Flood Control Department.
It is said that the main reason for continued water logging in the complexes of these office buildings despite standing on raised foundation is the failure of the Flood and Control Department to drain out the flood water in time.
The four engines of the Department installed at Samushang meant for drawing the flood water have not been functioning properly.
One of the gates at Samushang is meant for draining out the flood water from Lamphelpat area.
When the water level of Nambul risen, the gate is shut down and the engines are operated to draw out the water.
When The Sangai Express visited to inspect the site where the four engines of the Department are being kept today, it was found that two engines of 7 horse power capacity each were being press into service to drain out the flood water while two other engines of 15 horse power are
lying idle.
It was learnt that the two 15 horse power engines have not been in operation for the last four years and the servicing of the engines have been done only today.
Even if the servicing of the two engines have been done and could be put into operation, the possibility of utilising them is still remote as the underground cable that would feed power to the two engines have been cut while lying the pipeline.
Offices of various important Government departments like the Chief Electoral Officer, Settlement and Land Records, Sub-Registrar, Sewerage Project, ITI and 143 Ban CRPF are still reeling under flood water.
Most of the rooms in the Election Office including the barrack of the CRPF personnel deployed for security of the office complex have been flooded.
From its side, the Election Office has reportedly intimated to the Irrigation and Flood Control Department for taking up necessary measures.
The officials in the Election Office were seen removing their shoes and wading through the flood water while working inside their respective rooms.
