The Bishnupur district committee of AMSU will observe the 16th Students' Emancipation Day tomorrow at Moirang Multipurpose Higher Secondary School to pay tributes to the three students who laid down their lives to demand the basic needs of Moirang Multipurpose Higher Secondary School.
In the morning, tributes will be paid to the memories of the late students while a meeting will be held later in the hall of the school.
In a statement, AMSU recalled how one student, Haobijam Ibohal was shot dead in police firing during a strike launched to demand better infrastructure of the school on September 30, 1973.The again on May 26, 1979 students launched a hunger strike in pursuit of the same demand.
Some students were picked up by the police and put into the lock up.
On May 28 students from schools and colleges then went to the police station to protest.
The students were again herded into the lock up and the then OC fired upon the students, charged the student body.
Doctors who were called to attend to the hurt students were not allowed inside by the OC, said AMSU and added that two students, U Khelen and K Sarat died due to excessive bleeding.
