Imphal, January 28 2016:
A large number of North East people today gathered at Manipur Bhawan, Delhi under the banner of North-East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) to protest the killing of Chungkham Sanjit in an alleged fake encounter by Manipur police commandos on July 23, 2009 .
The forum submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Okram Ibobi through the Resident Commissioner of Manipur Bhavan demanding a thorough probe of the incident by an International body.
The forum further demanded that Imphal West SP Dr Akoijam Jhalajit be immediately put under suspension to initiate inquiry against him.
It further said that adequate compensation must be provided to the victim's family and the Government should tender an immediate apology to the victim's family and people of Manipur for brutally violating their democratic rights.
The forum cautioned that it would initiate a huge movement against the State Government if these demands are not fulfilled.
The memorandum said that Chungkham Sanjit was brutally killed by Manipur police commandos in a busy market area in Imphal on July 23, 2009 .
The police had then claimed that Sanjit was killed in retaliatory firing.
However, recent confession by Head Constable Th Herojit Singh has revealed that he was directed by then Imphal West Additional SP Dr Akoijam Jhalajit, who is now the SP of the same district to 'finish him off' .
Herojit had also admitted that Sanjit was unarmed when he was detained, the memorandum said.
It further said that this hard fact amply shows the way in which Manipur police commandos have been allowed to kill people freely.
This is a clear case of State-sponsored fake encounter, the memorandum alleged.
