81st Nupi Lan Memorial Day observed in districts

Imphal, December 12 2020: Remembering the two historic movements waged by the women of Manipur against mass exploitation and artificial famine triggered by the British, the 81st Nupi Lan Memorial Day was observed in different parts of the.

State, Agartala and Hojai, Assam, today.

The observance at Hojai district, Assam was organised by the Apunba Meira Paibi Lup, Hojai District.

BJP
BJP Mahila Morcha observed the day at Keishampat Lairembi Community Hall.

At the observance, Prof S Tikendra, president BJP Manipur Pradesh, said that the two women movements paved a way for political and economic reforms for Manipur.

Prof S Tikendra continued that the movement of 1939 started as artificial famine hit the State.

Ajay Jamwal, North-East Zonal secretary of the BJP, also attended the programme.

Agartala
Manipuri Literary and Cultural Forum, Tripura observed the 81 st Nupi Lan Memorial Day at Tarou Khul, Agartala.

Fitting tributes were paid to mothers who took part in the two women movements during the programme.

The gathering also observed a minute of silence.

At the event, 10 elder women were given a shawl each by the organiser.

A souvenir christened as Takhellei Nachom was also released during the programme.

Ningol Club
Ningol Club, Heirok also observed the 81st Nupi Lan Memorial Day at Heirok Part III, today.

Hijam Priyokumar, president CADA; Sophiya Khundongbam, president Ningol Club and Moirangthem Promila Vice-president Ningol Club attended the programme as presidium members.

Social scientist, Dr Dhanabir Laishram also attended the programme as a resource person.

At the event, Hijam Priyokumar said that December 12 marks an important date for the people of Manipur as one of the most important movements in the history of Manipur took place on this date.

Showing a similar spirit of the mothers who fought in the two movements, the women of Manipur, with a torch in their hands, are fighting against the AFSPA 1958, crime against women and drugs and alcohol abuse since 1980, he added.

He then appealed all to extend support to the '3rd Nupi Lan' to save Manipur from the hands of the oppressors.

Thoubal
Thoubal Ningombam Apunba Nupi Lup in association with NIYC, NYPC and SDC Ningombam Thoubal also observed the 81st Nupi Lan Memorial Day at Ningombam Sana Keithel.

The gathering paid floral tributes to the mothers who died in the two movements.

Principal of Thoubal College, Okram Chaoba Devi; Councillor of Thoubal Municipal Council Ward no 10, Hijam Jamuna Devi, TMC Ward no 11 Member, N Somorjit as presidium members.

The programme was held following social distancing due to COVID pandemic.

A Nupi Lan memorial race was also held as part of the observance.

Ningombam Ongbi Kete Devi; Okram Ongbi Maingou Devi and Asem Ongbi Sumila Devi bagged the 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions of the race.

PRPC
As part of the Nupi Lan Memorial Day, People Rights Protection Committee (PRPC) Irriphal East handed out simple gifts to 2 select elders and 83 people from economically backward families, today.

The programme was held at Keirao Makting Litan Makhong.

Speaking at the event, chief advisor of PRPC, social worker MI Khan said that Nupi Lan was waged against the oppressive British not only for the artificial famine that they created but also for the sake of the State's future.

Claiming that 4 Meitei pangals died and 17 seriously injured in the Nupi Lan, he added that families of the 4 deceased mothers have started receiving pension since 2015 .

LEIMAKON
The Leimarol Lamjingkon (LEIMAKON), in association with MLSS also observed Nupi Lan of 1939 as 'Nupigi Numit' today at LEIMAKON Women's Abode Complex, Achanbigei.

The programme held in the presence of MC Rita, president of LEIMAKON and MC Inaocha, secretary, MLSS as presidium members was also attended by children of Poirei Nawakoh.

Bishnupur
The Nupi Memorial Day was also observed at Ningthoukhong Bazar following COVID safety protocols, today.

At the observance organised by the Meira Paibi Apunba Lup Bishnupur (MPALB), floral tributes were paid to the mothers of Manipur who fought in the two women movements.

A sticker and banner for the anti-drug campaign carried out by the MPAL, MSF, UCOBID and AMOWVA were also launched during the programme.

MPALB president, N Thambaleima, UCOBID president, Th Norendro, Apunba Lup Ningthoukhong, convenor, N Nungshibabu, Anti Drug Campaign Bishnupur convenor, RK Robikanta and Ningthoukhong Municipal Council, Councillor attended the observance.

A similar observance was also held at Moreh.
