Imphal, March 08, 2014:
Outrightly decrying dumping of wastes in the school area, Ananda Singh Higher Secondary academy (Nongmeibung) Principal K Sumati Devi expressed strong resentment that inspite of formal intimations to the district authorities there has been no positive measure to stop a private party from dumping waste.
Speaking to newspersons at the Academy campus today, Sumati said after draining out the water from the pond located on the western end of the educational institution on February 7 and 8, truck loads of wastes continue to be dumped at the site.
With the waste materials emanating foul smell neither students appearing in the ongoing HSLC examination could focus on their task nor the teachers concentrate on their duties, pointed out the Principal while stating that teaching staff members urging representatives of Eastern Motor Transport Cooperative Society Limited to cease the waste dumping activities has failed to evoke positive response.
Moreover, formal complaints lodged to authorities of Imphal Municipal Council, Deputy Commissioner concerned and the Manipur Pollution Control Board for suitable measures to bar dumping of waste in the school area seem to have been ignored as dumping activities continue, she said.
Joining the media briefing, Joint Students' Coordinating Committee co-convenor Angamba Meetei vehemently condemning inaction by the authorities concerned demanded that MAHUD and IMC officials take immediate measures to stop the waste dumping activities and do the needful to ensure that neither the students nor the local populace endure any further inconveniences.
Even as the students' activist insisted that the Cooperative Society stop waste dumping activity with immediate effect, Society secretary N Anand said based on complaints by the school authorities and locals waste dumping has ceased and the previously dumped waste materials are being covered with earth to minimise the foul smell.
Contending that the Society did not comprehend the problem that might be created if waste materials were dumped to fill up the pond, he also revealed that the Society endorsed suggestions by officials of IMC and MAHUD that waste materials be dumped for commercial usage of the pond.
