A 48-hour bandh on Imphal-Dimapur road has begun from 6 pm today by Manipur Inter-State Taxi Service Workers Association in protest against the killing of driver Md Muna Ali from Assam in Sadar Hills, Manipur by unidentified men.
A sit-in protest was also held today in this connection by the transporters at North AOC, Imphal.
No Tata Winger van plied between Imphal and Dimapur today.
The Association, while strongly condemning the killing of the driver has threatened to intensify its agitation in collaboration with many civil society organisations if the culprits are not produced by the Government by March 10. Md Muna Ali alias Suto, 22 years, s/o Md Matalim alias Akbar Ali of Sukhajan village under Bokajan police station of Karbi Anglong district, Assam was reported missing since February 22. Md Muna Ali plied a Tata Winger van between Dimapur and Imphal.
On February 22 at 11 am, two men hired Md Muna Ali's Tata Winger van from North AOC, Imphal on the pretext of fetching a patient from Kangpokpi which is some 40 km north of Imphal.
Ever since Md Ali did not return.
On February 23, the two unidentified men called up one Chandrakumar Rai of Khakhati, Assam who is said to be the owner of the Tata Winger van, demanding some lakhs of rupees for the release of the driver and the van bearing registration number AS-09C-6892. Around 8 am on Friday, some people collecting fire-woods came across a dead body in the vicinity of Mulvom village which is just 12 km east of Kangpokpi police station.
It was reported to the police.
From the driving licence and the ID card found in one of the pockets of the deceased, the police confirmed the identity of the missing driver.
A bullet mark of .9mm pistol was found on the head of the deceased.
An empty case of the bullet was also found near the dead body.
