Imphal, March 08, 2014:
Construction of a new Sanjenthong bridge would begin next month.
It is said that the new Sanjenthong bridge would be the most majestic bridge of Imphal city.
According to an official source, the new bridge would be 60 metres approximately and its breadth would be enough for four lanes.
Work order amount for the bridge is Rs 28 crore.
The total estimated cost after adding contingency charge and other expenditures is Rs 31 crore.
The existing Sanjenthong bridge was constructed around 1970.In view of traffic snarls over Sanjenthong bridge which serves as a key link between Imphal West and Imphal East districts in spite of its limited breadth, the Government decided to construct a larger bridge notwithstanding the unsound financial condition of the State as a matter of urgency.
The new bridge is targeted for completion within a year.
But it is doubtful because of the State's sick financial condition.
When the bridge is under construction, vehicular traffic over the existing Sanjenthong bridge would be diverted to Minuthong, Moirangkhom and Thumbuthong, added the official.
