Mithun festival celebrated

The 1st Mithun (Bos Frontalis) Festival, Manipur was celebrated from February 27-28 at Lairam Phungka village under Kasom Khullen subdivision in Ukhrul district.
The celebration programme organised jointly by the North East Border Area Development Organisation (NEBADO), Manipur and Lairam Phungka Mithun Farmers was graced by Dr Narendra Prakash, Joint Director, ICAR Imphal as the chief guest.
Dr Chaoba, Dy Director, V&AH, Manipur; M Soren, GM, NABARD, Imphal; L Swamikanta Singh, Director, Communication and Capacity Development Unit, PHED, Lamphel; Dr Seibyasachi Mukherjee ARS, Sr Scientist, NRCM, Nagaland and Neichute Doulo, Coordinator, Entrepreneurs' Association, Nagaland were the other dignitaries attending the festival, according to the organisers.
Among others, the festival aims to promote and propagate germplasm of semi-domesticated mithun in their natural habitat, to conduct research and revive the lost tradition and customs relating to mithun, to produce enhanced production of improved breed mithuns, to motivate farmers to replace jhum cultivation with mithun farming, to spread awareness on scientific rearing of mithun, according to Paisho Keishing, president of NEBADO.
