Imphal, August 04:
Opposition Democratic People's Alliance (DPA) has raised eyebrows against appointment of a 'tainted' person as the new Governor of Manipur.
'At this very crucial situation, we need a clean man, preferably a senior politician to be the Governor', said FPM president Dr L Chandramani reacting to appointment of Shivinder Singh Sidhu as the new Governor of Manipur.
A former Secretary of Civil Aviation Shivinder Singh Sidhu was an accused in the Rs 420 crore HDW submarine deal kickback scam.
His appointment as the new Governor of the trouble-torn State was made yesterday following expiry of the five-year term of Arvind Dave.
FPM Legislature Wing leader M Nilachandra termed the appointment as unfortunate.
Fire brand Opposition MLA and Manipur People's Party chief O Joy Singh questioned why the Centre had to send a tainted person as the Governor of Manipur and pointed out that name of Sidhu was not even figure in the chart of probable Governors.
Joy further observed that a man of high integrity and capable of overseeing the present crisis should have been appointed to the august post.
BJP Legislature wing leader RK Dorendro and FPM MLA L Ibomcha also expressed their dissatisfaction over appointment.
It may be mentioned here that CBI had in 1990 registered a corruption case against a number of officials, including Sidhu, who had worked in a senior position in the Defence Ministry.
But the investigating agency last year sought permission from Delhi High Court to close the case contending that there was non-cooperation from authorities in Germany and Switzerland.
The closure report was later filed before a designated court which is yet to decide on it.
