Imphal, March 02:
The controversy surrounding the alleged illegal collection of tax from scrap transporters along NH-53 by Assam Rifles posted at Keithelmanbi at the rate of Rs 2000 per truck was a result of a misunderstanding, said a press release issued by joint secretary of the All Manipur Road Transport Drivers' and Motor Workers' Union Y Ibobi.
The AR personnel were demanding the money for off-loading and re-loading the freight of scraps in order to enable the security personnel check the vehicles and their loads for any weapon or illegal substance.
However, there was a communication gap between the security personnel and the truck drivers which resulted in the controversy, it clarified.
Convinced with the explanation that the money demanded was not a tax but service charge for hiring labourers to off-load and re-load, the drivers have also deposed before the Assam Rifles court of enquiry, it added.
