Fish Mela on Emoinu lined up

Imphal, November 17 2022: On January 3 Emoinu next year, the Fisheries Department will hold a fish mela, said Heikham Dingo today.

The Fisheries Minister informed this during a press meet held at his office at Secretariat North Block.

Notably, the Fisheries Department had successfully organised its annual Fish Fair cum Fish Crop Competition on Ningol Chakkouba festival October 26 recently.

During the fair, the Minister had announced that the Department will also hold a fish mela on Emoinu.

In the press meet today, Heikham Dingo said the Department is taking up all efforts to organise the fish mela successfully on January 3 .

Emoinu Eraatpa falls on January 3 next year.

As it is a ritual that is performed at night, the fish mela will begin from the morning of the same day.

Beside other varieties of fishes, Manipuri Sareng will also be made available, he said.

The fish fair held on October 26 was a success.

The fair had 125 stalls opened with the participation of around 200 farmers and cooperative societies.

The fish production at the fair had exceeded the targeted kilograms.

While it aimed at producing 1 lakh kilograms of fishes, the fair had displayed 1.27 lakh kilograms of fishes for sale.

The fishes were sold at a reduced rate and Rs 3,33,65,760 worth of fishes were sold at the fair, he said.

The fair had also produced 2,400 kilograms of Meitei Sareng.

Notably, farming of Meitei Sareng was introduced under Chief Minister N Biren Singh, he added.

The Fisheries Department is also opening its stalls at the Manipur Sangai Festival 2022, Dingo said.

On the recently concluded fish fair cum fish crop competition, Fisheries Director H Balkrishna, who was also present at the press meet said the Department has already selected the first, second and third best producers of fishes.

While the winners have been declared, the prizes will be given on July 10 National Fish Farmers Day next year.

He said L Dinamani of Tentha in Thoubal district had won the competition by producing 28,380 kilograms of fishes including 2,400 kilograms of Sareng.

He will get a cash award of Rs 1 lakh.

The second best producer award will be given to Ningthem Ningombam of Sabungkhok, Imphal East for producing 22,090 kilograms of fishes in the fair.

He will get a cash award of Rs 70,000.Salam Unil Shanta of Khordak, Bishnupur will be given the third prize for producing 20,332 kilograms of fishes.

He will get a cash award of Rs 50,000 .

Further, best local fish producer K Nabachandra of Wangoi, Imphal West will be awarded Rs 20,000.He produced 5,880 kilograms of Ukabi (Anabas testudineus) .

Bishnupur District Fisheries Officer K Dineshwor and Churachandpur DFO E Rameshwar will also be awarded Rs 10,000 each for best fish producer in valley and hill districts respectively.
