Ukhrul, Noney women briefed on their legal rights

Imphal, November 13 2021: District Legal Services Authority, Ukhrul under the aegis of Manipur State Legal Services Authority (MASLSA) & National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) organised a legal awareness programme on 'Empowerment of Tribal Women through knowledge of various laws' in collaboration with National Commission for Women (NCW) at Hamleikhong community hall in Ukhrul district on Friday.

The programme was organised with the purpose of encouraging women leaders to help any woman in distress.

DSLA Ukhrul secretary Masana E Panmei stressed the need of imparting legal knowledge to women and making them understand their rights so as to empower them.

She urged the participants not to be ignorant of different rights entitled to them, but to equip themselves with their knowledge, so as to help themselves and other women friends in need.

One Stop Centre, Ukhrul administrator Chonchuirinmayo Luithui spoke on the topic 'Empowerment of Tribal Women through knowledge of various laws' and highlighted various legislations, which empower women with various rights.

She exhorted the participants to be aware of the laws and exercise their rights.

She also gave insights into the various schemes that have been introduced especially for women.

Retainer lawyer of DLSA Ukhrul Ningnim YL spoke on women rights with special emphasis on Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005.She deliberated on provisions of the Act and urged the women folk not to remain silent if anyone faces domestic violence but to take recourse to law.

The programme was attended by women leaders and executive members of various localities of Ukhrul, women police officers, school teachers and women working in various government departments including One Step Centre, Ukhrul and Kamjong.

Meanwhile, as a part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, a legal awareness programme on the topic "Empowerment of Tribal Women" was held at Longmai Part-4 Peaceland, Noney district on Saturday.

The programme was organised by District Legal Services Authority, Tamenglong in collaboration with National Commission for Women under the aegis of National Legal Services Authority (NALSA).

The programme was presided over by First Class judicial magistrate (Noney) Leonid Ahanthem while advocates Seiram Thoi Thoi and PG Thairiklung briefed the gathering on rights of women as the resource persons.

The event was participated by Anganwadi Workers, ASHA workers, school teachers, women society leaders and other working women of Noney area.

As a part of the function, 40 Labour Cards were also distributed to women labourers by Leonid Ahanthem which was made under the initiative of Golmei Pouhoilung, PLV Legal Aid Clinic, Noney.

Manipur State Legal Services Authority in association with District Legal Services Authority, Tamenglong also organised a Legal Awareness Campaign through Multi Utility Van as a part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav and National Legal Services Authority's PAN Awareness and Outreach Campaign on Friday at Noney town.

Paralegal volunteers of Noney Legal Aid Clinic along with the officials of MASLA distributed leaflets and other study materials translated in Rongmei language to facilitate avail free legal aid by the public.

Similar poster were also pasted in the surrounding villages.

The team of the campaign covered Longmai Bazar, Khumji, Rangkhung, Awangkhul and Longmai villages.
