Imphal, October 16:
Despite the announcement that Dr Ch Jamini has been appointed as the chairperson of Manipur State Commission for Women by the Chief Minister, an official letter to this effect has not yet been received by her so far.
But interestingly, many people have already started coming to Dr Jamini to lodge their complaints in the hope of getting justice.
On the concluding day of the Yuva Shakti Abhiyan Convention held at Khuman Lampak on October 5, Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh had announced appointment of chairperson and two members of the Manipur State Commission for Women.
According to the announcement, Dr Ch Jamini has been appointed as the Chairperson and Padmashree Lingjalien Gangte and retired principal of GP College Lalija Begum as members of the Commission.
However, talking to The Sangai Express
at her residence today, Dr Jamini said she had not received any official letter to the effect of her appointment as the chairperson of the Commission although the Chief Minister had earlier made an announcement in this regard.
'So I do not know when I would be assuming the charge.
But surprising many people have already starting coming to me with their problems and cases in the hope getting justice', said Dr Jamini, who has been actively working and involving in various women related issues for the last 40 years or so.
'The response of the people only illustrate the urgent need to make the Commission functional', she added.
Speaking on the function of the Commission, Dr Jamini explained that Manipur State Commission for Women is only an advisory body and with its institution it does not meant that all the women related crimes in the State would be resolved once and for all.
At the most the Commission would keep track of the crimes being committed on women in different parts of the State and take up cases which are within the jurisdiction of the power given to it and the report of such cases would be forwarded as recommendations to the Departments concerned, he said, adding that it is the Government which is responsible for taking up necessary action and not the Commission.
Dr Jamini, a senior reader at GP Women's College before retiring from service as the Principal of DM College of Commerce, further pointed out that despite the fact that Manipuri womenfolk are coming to contribute their mite in various areas, crimes against women are still rampant.
While observing that the poor financial condition of the State and other factors might be behind the delay in making the Commission to start functional, Dr Jamini exhorted the people to prevail upon the Government to make the Commission functional at the earliest possible.
She also pledged to perform her duty diligently by taking into consideration the advises and suggestions of the experts.
