Senapati, July 16 2023:
The United Naga Council (UNC) has imposed a 12-hour total shutdown in all Naga areas of Manipur from 6 am to 6 pm on July 17 (Monday) in connection with the killing of a Naga woman in Imphal.
Putting up a list of demands, the UNC cautioned that further course of action will be initiated if their demands are not entertained within 48 hours.
In a statement, the UNC claimed that Lucy Maring , d/o Thoukhal Maring of Narum (Beaulahram) village, Pallel in Chandel district was murdered by Arambai Tenggol in the evening of July 15 at Keibi Heikakmapal under Lamlai police station, Imphal East district.
The UNC further alleged she (the deceased) was forcefully apprehended by meira paibis (women torch bearers) and handed over to Arambai Tenggol.
"It is unimaginable for a women organization like meira paibis who profess to be torch bearers of peace partaking in acts of killings", the UNC added.
The UNC then said it condemns "such barbaric acts committed on the 'innocent' Naga despite knowing her identity" .
Since the beginning of this unfortunate conflict between the Meiteis and the Kukis the Nagas have been advocating peace.
Saying that vested interest parties who wish to drag Nagas into the conflict will not be spared and their patience and accommodating acts should not be taken as a weakness, the UNC urged the authorities concerned to immediately constitute a judiciary inquiry and arrest those perpetrators of the crime (including those meira paibis who are complicit in the act of crime), and give exemplary punishment.
The UNC also demanded that 'cold blooded killing' of Naga woman Lucy Maring must be brought in the limelight of justice befittingly as per the Naga customary law.
The UNC also demanded that the Meitei civil society organizations will be equally held responsible for this "despicable act hence their role and position must be made known to all concerned" .
