International workshop on "Fisheries Management and Ecology" kicks off, MoU signed

A three days International Workshop on "Fisheries Management and Ecology: Fostering Knowledge Exchange" kicked off today at the VC Court Hall of Manipur University, Imphal.
According to a release issued by Dr Rameshori Yumnam, Assistant Professor, Department of Life Sciences (Zoology), Manipur University, Canchipur, the workshop was organised by the Department of Zoology in collaboration with Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Directorate of Coldwater Fisheries Research (Bhimtal), Bhimtal under the GIZ-NERAQ Project led by Potsdam Institute of Inland Fisheries, Germany.
The inaugural function was attended by Prof N.Lokendra Singh, Hon'ble Vice Chancellor of Manipur University; Dr Jefferson Tyrrel deWeber, Potsdam Institute of Inland Fisheries; Dr Uwe Brammick, Director of Science, Potsdam Institute of Inland Fisheries and Prof Th Binoy Singh as presidium members.

About 160 participants from different across the country are also taking part in the programme through online mode.
The function began with a welcome address delivered by Prof N Mohilal Meitei, Director, College Development Council, Manipur University followed by a speech from Dr Rameshori Yumnam, Co-ordinator of the programme.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof N Lokendra Singh emphasized the role of fishery sector taking paramount importance in creating livelihood and employment generation for the people of Manipur.
He remarked that Manipur University should start skill development courses in line with the New Education Policy.
Dr Jefferson Tyrrel deWeber stressed on the need for ecological modelling to understand the challenges in management of fisheries in the region.
Dr Uwe Brammick elaborated on the need for aquatic resource management of sustainable aquaculture, studying lakes & water bodies and future collaborative works in this direction.
Prof GKN Chhettry highlighted fish as a major source of protein and importance of aquaculture in improvement of livelihoods for farmers.
The function culminated with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr Shivakumar Vijayaraghavalu, Associate Professor, Department of Zoology, Manipur University.
Later, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between Manipur University and Potsdam Institute of Inland Fisheries, Germany signalling a new era of collaboration and partnership aimed at research collaboration, capacity building at different levels.
The MOU signing ceremony was held at VC chamber, Manipur University, in the presence of key representatives from both the organisations.
