Workshop on Fisheries Management & Ecology begins

A three-day international workshop on 'Fisheries Management and Ecology: Fostering Knowledge Exchange' is being organised by Department of Zoology, Manipur University in collaboration with Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR)-Direc-torate of Coldwater Fisheries Research (Bhimtal), under the G1Z-NERAQ Project led by Potsdam institute of Inland Fisheries at MU from March 7 till 9 .
The programme, attended by around 160 delegates from different states, was inaugurated at the VC Court Hah of Manipur University with a welcome address by MU College Development Council director Prof N Mohilal Meitei.
Programme coordinator Dr Rameshori Yumnam made the context setting of the workshop wherein she highlighted the importance and the probable benefits out of the programme.
Chief guest of the function, MU VC Prof N Lokendra Singh emphasised the role of fishery sector, taking paramount importance in creating livelihood and employment generation for the people of Manipur.
He remarked that MU should start skill development courses in line with the New Education Policy.
He also highlighted importance on fishery related entrepreneurship programmes of youth of the state.
While speaking as the guest of honour, Dr Jefferson Tyrrel deWeber of Potsdam Institute of Inland Fisheries, stressed on the need of ecological modelling and to understand the challenges in the management of fisheries in the region while Director of Science, Potsdam Institute of Inland Fisheries, Dr Uwe Brammick elaborated on the need for aquatic resource management of sustainable aquaculture, importance of studying lakes and water bodies and also emphasised the need of further future collaborative works in this direction.
Meanwhile, Prof GKN Chhettry highlighted fish as a major source of protein, the importance of aquaculture in improvement of livelihoods of farmers.
In his presidential speech, Prof Th Binoy Singh shared his views on importance and understanding of aquatic ecology in relation to aquaculture, which would help make aquaculture sustainable.
The inaugural programme ended with vote of thanks proposed by MU Department of Zoology associate professor Dr Shivakumar Vijayaraghavalu.
In continuation of the workshop and also in the light of future collaboration, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between MU and Potsdam Institute at the MU VC chamber later in the day.
