Imphal, April 27:
Asserting that Manipur is lagging behind other States of India in terms of development by a great mile due to corrupt and unscrupulous conduct of the elected representatives, Chairperson of the Manipur Human Rights Commission Justice WA Shishak noted that it's time to give these representatives a thorough political class so that they can work for the welfare of the people sincerely.
WA Shishak was speaking as chief guest on De-colonisation Day observance organised by the Kanglei Apunba Ima Yaipha Lup at MDU hall, Yaiskul today.
He observed that the central Government has been sanctioning large amounts of fund every year for the development of Manipur.
But the vicious practice of swindling and misappropriating public fund has been pulling back the State from the path of development thereby rendering the State one of the most backward State in the country, he noted.
Asserting that the people should no longer remain mute spectators and suffer silently when there is acute shortage of drinking water, electricity and food, the MHRC Chairperson exhorted the people to fight jointly for their basic needs.
He stated that the State Government has a great responsibility in the continued imposition of the AFSPA as well as in repealing the military Act.
As such, the State Government should work sincerely to repeal the draconian Act from Manipur which has become synonymous to all black laws in the region.
Observing that inciting fraternal killings cannot result in anything positive at the end, Shishak advocated that the Government should devise a pragmatic approach to solve the outstanding issues plaguing the State.
The observance was also attended by HERICOUN president RR Chothe, UCM secretary general W Seken, MEEKHOL president K Janaki, Th Ramani of Nupi Samaj, president of the Kanglei Apunba Ima Yaipha Lup A Premabati and others as presidium members.
Moreover, Prof Chinglen Maisnam of MU, Dr Ch Sheelaramani of DM College of Arts, editor of Kangleipakki Meira Wangkhem Shyamjai and former visiting guru of JNMDA Dr Nongmaithem Laingam presented papers on different topics as resource persons.
