Torrential rain, landslides cut off Tamenglong

Imphal, May 24 2016: Incessant rain in the past five days in Tamenglong district resulted in landslides at various sections of National Highway 37 and Tamenglong-Khongshang road, disrupting traffic movement.

"Nearly half of the road surface near Awangkhul, located about 17 skm from Noney, has been damaged by landslide.

Heavy vehicles, including goods carriers, are off the highway causing disturbance to supply of household consumer items in Tamenglong," said villagers.

They said, "Prices of consumer goods have risen in the district since the supply line has remained cut off.

One bag of superfine rice is being sold at Rs 1,400.There is acute shortage of consumer items" .

Only light vehicles were taking Imphal-Jiribam road.

NH-37 (Imphal-Jiribam road) and NH-102 (Imphal-Moreh road), considered the lifelines for landlocked Manipur, were badly damaged by torrential rain, coupled with landslides during the past several days.

Besides, many areas of the State are now reeling under flood.

The Border Road Task Force (BRTF) personnel were working round-the-clock to repair the damaged portions along NH-37, officials said.

Several sections of Tamenglong-Khongshang road have also been turned into muddy fields following the torrential rain disrupting flow of traffic, sources said.

A long stretch of Imphal-Tamenglong road near Tamei has been damaged due to landslide.

The stretch of IT Road from Keithelmanbi to Khonglong has also been damaged due to incessant rain.

Power supply at Noney, Nungba, Tamenglong, Tousem, Tamei and Khoupum was cut off due to rain and storm.

Electric supply has been restored in some of the affected areas, sources said.
